«This account already has the maximum of three phones.» (device_limit)

  • SaaS · Self-hosted · Android

Symptom

When linking a new phone, the console shows «This account already has the maximum of three phones. Remove one first.» and the phone app says the account already has the maximum number of phones and you should remove one in the console, under «My phones». The API answers 409 device_limit.

Cause

Each account can have at most three approver phones at once. The limit reduces the risk of forgotten phones still being able to approve sign-ins. Old phones you no longer use still count until removed.

Fix

  1. Sign in to the console with your passkey or one of your current phones.
  2. Open «My phones».
  3. Choose the phone you no longer use and remove it. A recent confirmation may be requested.
  4. Link the new phone again; see Link your phone.

If you no longer have access to any registered phone, nor to your passkey, ask your administrator to remove a phone from your account.

Administrator: on the person's record, in the list of phones, remove the one no longer in use. Removing a phone ends the sessions it approved.

When to escalate

If the list shows fewer than three phones and the error persists, contact support with the time of the attempt.
